According to his family and the Ministry of Defense, the late professor had been fighting stroke for approximately the past four years and suffered a fourth stroke attack before his passing.
His remains arrived at the Kalibata National Heroes Cemetery in South Jakarta on Sunday morning (March 29, 2026) for a military funeral. The burial ceremony was led directly by Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin as the state’s final tribute to the distinguished intellectual and senior statesman.

He held the position of Professor of International Relations at the University of Indonesia and authored numerous works on political science, defense, and international relations. His writings remain key references in studies on post-New Order civil-military reform.
His notable ministerial positions included:

- Minister of Education and Culture under President B.J. Habibie
- First civilian Minister of Defense under President Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur), serving from 1999 to 2000
- Minister of Defense again in the United Indonesia Cabinet under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), from 2004 to 2009
