Indonesia Mourns the Passing of Prof. Dr. Juwono Sudarsono, Former Defense Minister and Senior Statesman

According to his family and the Ministry of Defense, the late professor had been fighting stroke for approximately the past four years and suffered a fourth stroke attack before his passing.

His remains arrived at the Kalibata National Heroes Cemetery in South Jakarta on Sunday morning (March 29, 2026) for a military funeral. The burial ceremony was led directly by Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin as the state’s final tribute to the distinguished intellectual and senior statesman.

Prior to the burial, the body was laid in state at the Hall of Silence (Ruang Hening) of the Ministry of Defense on Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat, Central Jakarta, from early morning. Juwono Sudarsono was born in Ciamis, West Java, on March 5, 1942. He was the son of Sudarsono, who served as Minister of Home Affairs in the Second Sjahrir Cabinet. Throughout his career, he was widely respected as an academic, diplomat, and independent politician within both government and academic circles.

He held the position of Professor of International Relations at the University of Indonesia and authored numerous works on political science, defense, and international relations. His writings remain key references in studies on post-New Order civil-military reform.

His notable ministerial positions included:

  • State Minister for the Environment under President Soeharto
  • Minister of Education and Culture under President B.J. Habibie
  • First civilian Minister of Defense under President Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur), serving from 1999 to 2000
  • Minister of Defense again in the United Indonesia Cabinet under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), from 2004 to 2009

His tenure as Defense Minister covered a critical period of TNI reform, the restructuring of civil-military relations, and the management of internal conflicts in the early years of Indonesia’s democratic era.

As the first civilian to lead the Defense Ministry, Juwono Sudarsono was credited with bringing an academic and diplomatic perspective to national defense policy.

His eldest son, Vishnu Juwono, stated that his father had given decades of dedicated service to the nation and the state, both through academia and government. The family described him as “a true patriot who devoted his life to the country.”

The passing of Juwono Sudarsono is regarded as a significant loss for Indonesia’s generation of transition-era leaders. Condolences have poured in from state officials, academics, and the public. Condolence wreaths filled the funeral home in Pondok Indah since Saturday afternoon, while the ceremonies at the Ministry of Defense and Kalibata Cemetery served as the final moments of national respect.

Historically, Juwono Sudarsono’s contributions extended beyond defense to environmental affairs and education. His unique experience as an intellectual directly involved in government has become important material for studies in international relations and defense policy.

The funeral procession on Sunday, March 29, 2026, was solemn and attended by family, relatives, colleagues, and high-ranking state officials. He was laid to rest at Kalibata National Heroes Cemetery, the final resting place of Indonesia’s national heroes and prominent figures.
