For the First Time, ICSSS Held Book Review About Memories of Violence

en.Malanginspirasi.com – Initiative Critical Social Sciences Studies (ICSSS) held a collaborative event titled “Bedah Buku: Memori-Memori Kekerasan: Ketegangan, Identitas dan Nasionalisme (Book Review: Memories of Violence: Tension, Identity, and Nationalism)

This event was successfully held through a collective initiative between ICSSS,  Malang State University (UM) Library, the Interdisciplinary Lab, and the History Department of UM.

The book review took place on Monday, March 2, 2026, at the Pustakafe, UM.

Presenting at the book review were Prof. Dr. Hariyono, M.Pd (Rector of UM) and one of the book’s authors, Arif Subekti, M.A. (Secretary of the UM History Department/Author), Nora Titahning Ayudha, S.Sosio., M.Si (ICSSS Researcher/Interdisciplinary Lab) as reviewer, and Nurenzia Yannuar, S.S., M.A., Ph.D. (Head of the UM Library Unit).

This event occurred solemnly and dialectically in a rainy atmosphere and during the fasting month.

Dozens of participants from various UM academic communities across faculties attended this event.

In an introduction titled ‘Mengapa Mengingat Kekerasan (Why Remember Violence?), Grace Leksana, the book’s editor, wrote that remembering violence is not to rub salt in the wounds or maintain resentment.

Yet, it aims to prevent similar incidents from recurring in the present and future.

Memories of violence can also create a desire to resist power and destabilize that single power. Refusing to discuss it is tantamount to refusing to see Indonesian society as a whole.

Nora, an ICSSS reviewer and researcher, welcomed this agenda as a good start for ICSSS’s future endeavors.

“This is a great start for ICSSS, which is just starting out. In time to come, we invite our colleagues to collaborate in this collective initiative to build a critical ambiance in social science studies. You’re all invited!” she told the media.

For additional information, the ICSSS is a collective initiative formed to foster an ecosystem for critical social science studies.

The researchers and academics who initiated this initiative include Abdul Kodir, S.Sosio, M.Sosio, P.h.D. (Researcher and Lecturer in the Department of Sociology, UM), Arif Subekti, M.A. (Researcher and Lecturer in the Department of History, UM), Nora Titahning Ayudha, S.Sosio., M.Si. (Researcher and Lecturer in the Department of Sociology, UM), Muhammad Asyrofi Al Kindy, S.Pd., M.Sc. (Researcher and Lecturer in the Department of Geography, UM), and Donny Maulana, S.Pd., M.Pd. (Researcher and Lecturer in the Department of History, UM).

The work of the ICSSS will include mainstreaming critical studies and studies of branches of the social sciences, collaborative interdisciplinary research, and disseminating the latest findings.
