en.Malanginspirasi.com — The Forestry Study Program, in collaboration with the International Office of the Faculty of Agriculture, Brawijaya University (FP UB), once again held an International Guest Lecture to support the teaching of the Forest Hydrology course.
The theme of the event “Lessons from the 2025 Sumatra Flood; Moving Beyond Simplistic Deforestation Narratives,” was held on Thursday (April 2) in the 3rd Floor of the Postgraduate Building Hall of FP UB.
Approximately 80 students from the Forestry Study Program and the Land and Water Management Study Program. the guest lecture.
The participants’ enthusiasm was evident in the high level of participation in the discussion session, which explored the relationship between land cover change, hydrological systems, and flood disasters.
On this occasion, FP UB presented international forestry expert, Meine van Noordwijk, who is currently affiliated with ICRAF and Wageningen University & Research.

In his presentation, he encouraged participants to view flooding more comprehensively and not simply attribute its causes to deforestation.
He argued that overly simplistic narratives regarding deforestation often ignore the complex interactions between various environmental and social factors.
“Flooding like the one that occurred in Sumatra in 2025 cannot be explained by a single cause like deforestation. We need to look at the entire system, including extreme rainfall, soil conditions, landscape governance, and community land-use practices,” he explained.
He also emphasized the importance of a landscape-based approach in understanding and managing hydrological disaster risks in tropical regions.
