EN.malanginspirasi.com — The Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) is actively exploring a strategic collaboration with the Indonesian Naval Academy (AAL) to establish a Drone Warfare Study Center. The initiative forms part of a broader effort to strengthen Indonesia’s technological independence in national defense.
The opportunity was discussed during a courtesy visit by a senior AAL delegation to the ITS Rector’s Office in the Rectorate Building on Thursday, 26 February 2026.
ITS Rector Prof. Dr. (HC) Ir. Bambang Pramujati, S.T., M.Sc.Eng., Ph.D. described the visit as an outstanding opportunity for meaningful collaboration.
“Especially since ITS is home to numerous lecturers and experts deeply engaged in drone technology,” he said.
Prof. Bambang, a Professor of Mechanical Engineering, added that the institute already possesses the required expertise and world-class facilities to support the partnership.
“We have multiple research teams working in robotics, automotive technology, and related fields, all ready to contribute,” he noted.
Boosting National Defense Independence
On behalf of AAL, Institution Secretary First Admiral TNI Dr. Asep Iwa Soemantri, S.E., M.M., M.Tr.Opsla (affectionately known as Iwa) stressed the urgent need to advance drone technology in Indonesia, particularly for defense purposes.
“Unmanned defense systems such as drones are highly efficient and represent the future of national security,” he emphasized.
Admiral Iwa further highlighted that drone applications extend far beyond the military domain.
“Sectors like agriculture also require this technology,” he added.
He explained that the proposed collaboration would significantly elevate Indonesia’s drone capabilities, especially in military applications.
ITS was selected as the ideal partner due to its proven excellence in technology and engineering.
“Moreover, the close proximity of our two campuses will make coordination seamless and highly effective,” he remarked.

Following the productive discussion, Admiral Iwa delivered a guest lecture to students of the ITS Department of Information Technology.
Titled “Building Character for Future Leaders,” the session took place at Auditorium Tower 2 and served as an initial step toward deeper strategic cooperation, particularly in developing outstanding human capital.
The prospective ITS–AAL partnership directly supports Indonesia’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It aligns with SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), while the guest lecture contributes to SDG 4 (Quality Education).
This collaboration marks a significant milestone in Indonesia’s journey toward technological sovereignty and positions both institutions at the forefront of defense innovation.
