Malanginspirasi.com – Malang City Mayor Ir. Wahyu Hidayat M.M. delivered further explanation about the Barokah Waste Sorting Place (Tempe Sabar) community and its significant role of waste management in the city.
According to Wahyu, Tempe Sabar collaborates with the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in order to raise public awareness that dumping waste in rivers and seas is haram (forbidden).
“So, this is our big desire to increase the awareness among people of the right method of waste disposal. The Ministry of Environment appointed us to enhance the role of Tempe Sabar in collaboration with the MUI,” he told the media after the National Press Day 2026 (HPN) ceremony on Sunday, February 15th, 2026.
Wahyu stated that the Malang City Government (Pemkot) has embraced Tempe Sabar as a waste processing and separation facility.

“We expect that local residents in the area don’t dump their garbage into the river nearby,” he continued.
According to Wahyu, this movement started because of their habit of dumping their garbage into the Rolak River.
“The location of Tempe Sabar is on the banks of the Rolak River. Now, people no longer throw their trash into the river but give it to Tempe Sabar, who will sort it,” Wahyu explained.
‘Tempe Sabar’ is located on Jalan KH Hasyim, Malang City, and has been operating since 2022 as a social community that donates the profit of the managed waste sales to orphans, the poor, and sanitation workers.
It was Susianah Ita and Joni Dwianto who started this community.
They were deeply concerned about the lack of public awareness regarding waste disposal.
At that time, Tempe Sabar partnered with the Student Executive Board (BEM) of Brawijaya University (UB) Malang before finally coming up with the concept of giving back to the community through waste donation.
The community gives the donation every six months, and the value varies from IDR 10 million to IDR 20 million.
Currently, approximately 20 local residents have joined the Tempe Sabar community.
