EN.malanginspirasi.com – Indonesia’s Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar said the government has readied anticipatory measures to prevent the traditional Takbiran night of Eid al-Fitr from conflicting with the Hindu Day of Silence, Nyepi in Bali, both falling on Thursday, March 19, 2026.
Umar made the statement on Wednesday after briefing President Prabowo Subianto at the State Palace. He told reporters that Nyepi’s strict rules — which prohibit noise and vehicle activity for 24 hours — would be fully respected while still allowing Muslim communities to mark the eve of Eid.
“We know that on Nyepi Day, noisy sounds and vehicle activities are not permitted,” Umar said.
The potential overlap arises because astronomical calculations and some religious organizations predict Eid al-Fitr 1447 H falling on Friday, March 20, making the previous evening the traditional night for Takbiran chants.
Dialogue and Compromise Ensure Mutual Respect
After intensive coordination with Bali’s provincial government and local community leaders, an agreement was reached that allows Takbiran to proceed without undermining Nyepi’s solemnity.
“Alhamdulillah, we have coordinated with the regional government and community figures in Bali. There is already an agreement that Takbiran can still be carried out and does not conflict with Nyepi,” Umar explained.
Under the compromise, Takbiran will be restricted to between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. local time (WITA). It will not use sound systems or loudspeakers that could disturb the island’s enforced silence.
“Nyepi will continue as it should, and Takbiran will also proceed with adjustments. Takbiran will not use sound systems and will be time-limited, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. local time,” the minister added.
Umar described the arrangement as a reflection of Indonesia’s maturity in managing religious diversity.
“This is the face of Indonesia. When two major religious moments meet, we do not pit them against each other. But find common ground through dialogue and consensus. The spirit of tolerance and mutual respect must continue to be nurtured,” he said.

“We accept potential differences in the determination of Eid al-Fitr as something ordinary in Indonesia’s religious life. We will wait for the official announcement according to the established mechanism,” Umar stated.
He urged all religious communities to await the formal declaration and maintain a calm atmosphere.
“We hope every faith community can perform their worship peacefully, devoutly, and with full mutual respect. We will ensure everything runs smoothly and need the support of all Indonesians in preserving social harmony,” he concluded.
Similar cases in Indonesia’s diverse regions have previously been resolved through local deliberation. Bali’s long-standing tradition of interfaith tolerance has often served as a national model for managing concurrent celebrations.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs said coordination across agencies and religious leaders will continue in the lead-up to the critical period of March 19–20, 2026.
