TNI Detains Four Soldiers Suspected in Acid Attack on KontraS Activist Andrie Yunus

EN.malanginspirasi.com – The Indonesian National Armed Forces Headquarters (Mabes TNI) announced on Wednesday, 18 March 2026, that its Military Police Center (Puspom TNI) has detained four active-duty soldiers suspected of carrying out an acid attack on Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS).

“Four individuals suspected of assaulting Andrie Yunus have been detained,” said Head of Puspom TNI Major General TNI Yusri Nuryanto during a press conference at Mabes TNI in Jakarta.

The four soldiers, identified by initials NDP (Captain), SL (First Lieutenant), PHW (First Lieutenant), and ES (Sergeant), belong to the Denma unit of the Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS) TNI. They come from the Navy and Air Force branches.

They are currently being held at Pomdam Jaya and are undergoing intensive interrogation by Puspom TNI.

Yusri stressed that investigators are still determining the motive behind the attack.

“We are still thoroughly examining the motive,” he said, as quoted by KompasTV’s YouTube channel.

Puspom TNI will continue the process by obtaining a visum et repertum medical report and formally reporting the case to civilian police for further handling. The four soldiers have not yet been officially named as suspects, in line with the presumption of innocence principle, although they are already under temporary detention.

Polri-TNI Coordination

Earlier, the Jakarta Metropolitan Regional Police (Polda Metro Jaya) had stated that the perpetrators numbered four, acted in an organized manner, used two motorcycles, and were captured on 86 CCTV cameras. The suspects reportedly tailed the victim before fleeing toward Bogor. The case is now being handled jointly by the National Police (Polri) and the TNI.

The TNI’s internal investigation was launched following widespread public speculation about military involvement.

TNI Information Center Chief Major General TNI Aulia Dwi Nasrullah had previously pledged a professional and transparent process. President Prabowo Subianto also issued a direct order for an objective and rapid investigation.

The Incident

The acid attack occurred on Thursday night, 12 March 2026, at approximately 23:30 WIB on Jalan Salemba I-Talang in the Senen area of Central Jakarta.

Andrie Yunus was targeted while riding home after recording a podcast at the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) office. He suffered burns covering 20-24 percent of his body—primarily on the face, neck, chest, back, and both arms—along with severe chemical trauma (grade three) to the cornea of his right eye.

After intensive treatment in the High Care Unit (HCU) at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM), Andrie Yunus is now in stable condition and no longer in a life-threatening state.

“At present, the patient’s general condition is stable and not life-threatening. Medical treatment will continue in stages according to his progress, including possible tissue reconstruction and further procedures to restore vision function,” said RSCM Legal and Public Relations Manager Yoga Nara in a written statement on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.

According to KontraS, Andrie’s full recovery will take a considerable amount of time. He remains in isolation and can only be visited by immediate family. He is able to communicate clearly. The Ministry of Health has declared that all treatment at RSCM will be provided free of charge.
