Muhammadiyah Holds Nationwide Eid al-Fitr Prayers on Friday, March 20, 2026, Marking 1 Shawwal 1447 H

EN.malanginspirasi.com – Thousands of Muhammadiyah congregants throughout Indonesia performed Eid al-Fitr prayers for 1 Shawwal 1447 H simultaneously on Friday, March 20, 2026. This determination was made by the Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah (PP Muhammadiyah) based on astronomical calculations (hisab) using the Global Unified Hijri Calendar (KHGT), confirming that all astronomical criteria for entering the month of Shawwal had been met.

The Eid prayers took place in the morning after sunrise, generally starting between 06:00–07:00 WIB (adjusted to local time), followed by the Eid sermon (khutbah). Primary venues included open fields, mosque courtyards, Muhammadiyah schools, and temporarily closed streets to accommodate large crowds of worshippers.

In Jakarta, PP Muhammadiyah held the prayers at its central office in Menteng, Central Jakarta. Worshippers filled the parking area and spilled onto the street in front of the building, with the road temporarily closed and traffic managed by security personnel and police. The prayers were led by Imam Ahmad Maulana Yusuf from Masjid At-Tanwir PP Muhammadiyah.

In Surabaya, the Muhammadiyah Regional Leadership (PDM) for the City of Surabaya prepared 104 locations spread across 31 districts—an increase from the previous year’s 102 points. Venues ranged from mosque courtyards and open fields to streets and school grounds. The event was coordinated with the Surabaya Police (Polrestabes) and the City Government. One of the most crowded sites was Jalan Pahlawan in Bubutan, which drew thousands of worshippers. The proceedings were reported to be solemn and orderly.

Zero Waste Eid

Similar vibrancy appeared in other regions outside East Java. In the Special Region of Yogyakarta, PWM DIY prepared 1,374 sites spread across five regencies/cities—one of the largest national figures—with the “Zero Waste Eid” initiative to maintain cleanliness after the event.

While in Bekasi, dozens of sites were set up in both the regency and city areas, including the Mustikajaya neighborhood. In Bogor, a central gathering took place at Alun-alun Leuwiliang, alongside synchronized points in various branches. Observances were also noted in North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and eastern regions such as Makassar and Sangihe.

In Malang, worshippers performed Eid prayers at the Helipad Field on UMM Campus 3, among other sites spread across the five districts of Malang City.

Today’s worship atmosphere was observed to be reverent and disciplined, with congregations arriving at venues since dawn. Muhammadiyah emphasized spiritual focus (khusyuk), interfaith tolerance, and post-prayer fellowship (silaturahmi).

For reference, Muhammadiyah’s determination differs by one day from the Indonesian government’s official announcement, which set Eid al-Fitr for Saturday, March 21, 2026, based on a combination of astronomical calculations and moon sighting (rukyatul hilal) confirmed during the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ Isbat session. This difference is a longstanding part of Indonesia’s religious tradition, with calls for mutual respect and unity.
