KAI Simplifies Argo Bromo Anggrek Train Into KA Anggrek Starting May 9

en.malanginspirasi.com – PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has announced a significant rebranding of the premium KA Argo Bromo Anggrek into KA Anggrek.

The train, known for connecting Jakarta and Surabaya, will officially change its name to KA Anggrek effective Saturday, May 9, 2026.

KAI’s official Instagram account made this announcement on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.

“Starting May 9, 2026, KA Argo Bromo Anggrek will present itself with a new identity as KA Anggrek,” the statement read.

KAI described the change as a form of name simplification that preserves the legacy of the long-standing service cherished by Indonesian travelers.

The Argo Bromo Anggrek has been a symbol of premium rail travel in Indonesia since its evolution in the late 1990s.

Its predecessor, the JS-950 Argo Bromo, was inaugurated by President Suharto in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of Indonesian independence.

The name ‘Argo Bromo’ draws from the majestic Mount Bromo in East Java, while “Anggrek” (orchid) — Indonesia’s national flower — was added in 1997 to distinguish it from earlier services and reflected in the train’s distinctive purple-and-white livery.

Operating primarily on the Jakarta (Gambir) – Surabaya (Pasar Turi) route via Semarang and Cirebon, the train offers Executive Class and luxurious Compartment Suite accommodations.

It has long been regarded as one of Indonesia’s fastest and most comfortable inter-city services, significantly reducing travel time along the busy northern Java corridor.

Timing and ContextThe rebranding comes shortly after a tragic collision involving the Argo Bromo Anggrek and a commuter train (KRL) at Bekasi Timur Station on April 27, 2026.

While KAI has not explicitly linked the name change to the incident, many people viewed this name change as part of broader efforts to refresh the train’s image and enhance service standards.

KAI has assured passengers that existing tickets purchased under the old name remain valid for travel on the newly named KA Anggrek. No changes to schedules, routes, or fares have been announced in connection with the rebranding.

The news has elicited mixed responses on social media. Many longtime passengers expressed nostalgia for the full historic name ‘Argo Bromo Anggrek’, which has been ingrained in Indonesian travel culture for decades.

Others welcomed the simplification, noting that “Anggrek” has become a shorthand reference for the service over the years.
