en.malanginspirasi.com — Press Council (Dewan Pers) Chairman Komaruddin Hidayat emphasized that the press should implement freedom responsibly by upholding professionalism, objectivity, and journalistic ethics.
Komaruddin made this statement while attending a fun walk with media personnel and the public to commemorate World Press Freedom Day 2026 in Jakarta on Sunday, May 10, 2026.
“How do we maintain freedom on the one hand, but also protect the public from becoming victims of a press that is too free and without ethics?” said Komaruddin.
According to him, press freedom is an important element of democracy, though there should go along well with social responsibility to the public.
“The press should uphold professionalism, objectivity, and ethics as three main principles,” he emphasized.
He explained that Dewan Pers continues to strive to maintain a balance between defending press freedom and protecting the public from the impacts of uncontrolled information.

“We safeguard and defend press freedom, but press freedom also takes into account how to safeguard and defend the public so that they do not become victims of uncontrolled freedom. That balance is what we maintain,” he said.
On that occasion, Komaruddin also stated the importance of the media as a credible and trustworthy source of information for the public.
This is especially amidst the rapid flow of digital information and the rise of disinformation.
“Discussion is a human need. But when there are major and significant issues, what the public seeks is a reliable news source. Therefore, we must be in a position to be a trusted source of information,” he said.
Attending the 2026 World Press Freedom Day event was various members of the press, media organizations, broadcasting institutions, and government officials concerned with strengthening a healthy press ecosystem in Indonesia.
