UMM Physiotherapy Students Host “Silent Signal” Talk on Injury Prevention

Malanginspirasi.com – Physiotherapy students from the 2023 cohort at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) successfully organized the Physiotherapy Educational Talk titled “Silent Signal: What Your Body Tells You Before Injury Happens” on Wednesday, 19 November 2025. The event took place in Room 601, 5th Floor, GKB 5 Building, UMM, from 08:30 to 12:00 WIB.

The seminar was specifically designed to educate school students, university students, athletes, and recreational sports enthusiasts. The discussion specifically addressed injuries common in currently trending sports such as running, pilates, tennis, and padel.

Real-World Implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL)

This event served as a practical implementation of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) course for the 2023 Physiotherapy students at UMM.

The activity was designed to sharpen their scientific communication skills and ability to structure educational material, while reinforcing the role of physiotherapy as a valid source of movement health information.

“The main objective of this activity is twofold. First, it is a PjBL implementation for us, the Class of 2023, to strengthen our communication and scientific education skills,” said Ilma Shabhati, Chairperson of the Committee.

“Second, and most importantly, it is to provide direct education to the community and sports enthusiasts about how crucial it is to understand early signals before an injury occurs. We also want to maintain body movement function and emphasize that physiotherapy is a valid source of information regarding movement health,” she explained.

The Educational Talk focused on injury prevention and early management during exercise.
Student-Led Presentations

All materials were delivered directly by four 2023 Physiotherapy students:

  • Janurian Radinsa Takorneba: Dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain) and its relation to physical activity
  • Resty Leisya Dewi: Concepts of Injury
  • Mohammad Na’im Firmasyah: Myths and Facts about Massage During Injury
  • Zyahra Auraliza Syahputri: Initial Injury Management Simulation

The entire program, including 20–30-minute presentation and practice sessions, was fully designed and executed by the students, demonstrating their readiness to become competent agents of change in the field.

“With the current boom in sports like running, pilates, and tennis across all age groups, knowledge about injury prevention remains very limited,” Ilma said.

“This seminar is a vital opportunity for us to deliver scientifically sound and accountable education,” she added.

Future Plans: An Annual Event

Responding to high participant enthusiasm and the importance of this education, the organizers plan to establish the Physiotherapy Educational Talk as a routine annual agenda.

The organizers provided gifts to participants who asked questions.

As a follow-up, the UMM Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Department targets expanding the scope of future events. Plans include involving alumni and professionals from various institutions, as well as forging collaborations with schools, the sports industry, and health institutions.

All attendees received certificates as a token of appreciation for their participation.
