FTP UB Transforms into Faculty of Agroindustrial and Biosystem Technology

Malanginspirasi.com – The transition of the Faculty of Agricultural Technology (FTP) at Universitas Brawijaya (UB) to the Faculty of Agroindustrial and Biosystem Technology (FTAB) is far more than a simple name change. It reflects a significant expansion in the faculty’s academic scope and vision.

This was announced by the Chair of the Senate, Prof. Dr. Ir. Bambang Susilo, M.Sc.Agr., during a press conference following the Open Senate Meeting for FTP’s 28th Anniversary.

The event took place on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at the Samantha Krida Building.

Prof. Bambang explained that the new name better represents the faculty’s ongoing developments.

“We were established in 1998. What started as a department or study program has now grown into the Faculty of Agricultural Technology,” he said.

“Back then, the name ‘Agricultural Technology’ was broad and general,” Prof. Bambang added.

Key Reasons for the Name Transition from FTP to FTAB

He pointed out that retaining the name “Agricultural Technology” could cause confusion.

“If we call it Agricultural Technology, people might assume it’s the same as the technology programs in the Faculty of Agriculture. In the Faculty of Agriculture, there are also technologies like fertilization techniques and pest and disease management,” he told journalists.

Moreover, the term “Agricultural Technology” often leads the public to associate it narrowly with farming or crop cultivation.

“Society generally thinks agricultural technology is just about planting crops—always like that,” he said.

Prof. Bambang shared a light-hearted but telling example:

“Even food orders via GoFood from FTP students often get delivered to the Faculty of Agriculture by mistake,” he explained.

He emphasized that this name change makes UB a pioneer in Indonesia.

“At IPB or Universitas Gadjah Mada, the faculties are similar in structure. We are the first in the country to transition from Agricultural Technology to the Faculty of Agroindustrial and Biosystem Technology,” he stated.

Revolutionary Development of Undergraduate Programs at FTP UB

Prof. Bambang highlighted FTP UB’s distinctive character.

“Outside of Brawijaya, there are typically only three undergraduate programs in this field: Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Industrial Technology, and Food Technology,” he noted.

Currently, FTP UB is developing three additional programs originally from the Biosystem Engineering department: Environmental Engineering, Process Engineering (Bioprocess Engineering), and Biotechnology.

“If we kept the name ‘Agricultural Technology,’ it wouldn’t fully cover everything we are now developing,” he concluded.
