en.malanginspirasi.com – Indonesia’s Constitutional Court on Tuesday evening rejected a petition seeking to annul Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s 2024 election victory, ruling that the applicants lacked legal standing even as judges noted they found no convincing evidence he holds a high school-equivalent diploma.
The court, in a decision read out late on October 6, 2026, declared the petition “not receivable”.
The case, registered as No. 01/PHPU.PRES-XXIV/2026, was filed last month by a group of 12 petitioners led by former Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights Denny Indrayana, along with the Independent Election Monitoring Committee (KIPP), Partai Ummat, and several retired military officers and citizens.
The petitioners argued that Gibran failed to meet the minimum educational requirement under Indonesia’s election law.
The law mandates that presidential and vice-presidential candidates must have completed senior high school (SMA) or an equivalent level.
They claimed his overseas education records were inadequately verified and improperly accepted by the General Elections Commission (KPU).
In its considerations, the court stated it found no convincing evidence that Gibran possesses a diploma, certificate, or equivalent document from abroad proving completion of senior secondary education.

Judges noted that documents such as a “certificate of attendance” submitted in support of educational equivalency only proved participation in learning, not graduation.
However, the panel of judges emphasized that it could not disqualify or remove Gibran from office.
Constitutional Justice Adies Kadir explained that Gibran’s status as a candidate ended upon his inauguration and swearing-in as vice president on October 20, 2024.
The court said questions about the fulfillment of candidacy requirements now fall under the authority of other state institutions as regulated by the 1945 Constitution, rather than remaining within the framework of election result disputes (PHPU).
Gibran, 39, the eldest son of former President Joko Widodo, attended Orchid Park Secondary School in Singapore and later studied at UTS Insearch in Australia before obtaining a bachelor’s degree from the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS).
He ran alongside current President Prabowo Subianto in the 2024 election.
The ruling has fueled discussion on social media platform X, where users have focused on the court’s observation regarding the absence of clear diploma evidence while noting that Gibran’s position remains secure for now.
Some legal observers, including the petitioners’ counsel, have suggested that further political or constitutional processes, such as those involving the House of Representatives (DPR), could still be pursued under different mechanisms.
Gibran continues to serve as Indonesia’s vice president.
The government has previously stated that the matter falls under the judiciary’s authority.
