Lilik Choirum Elevating Indonesian Ethnic Art to the Global Stage

Malanginspirasi.com – Lilik Choirum, a talented artisan from Malang, Indonesia, has successfully introduced her handcrafted ethnic artworks to the international market, captivating customers from Australia, the United States, and France. Her unique creations, crafted from natural stones and employing electroforming techniques, have gained popularity abroad. Particularly for their incorporation of distinctive symbols such as the swastika and crescent moon.

The genesis of Lilik’s international clientele began serendipitously when an Australian woman encountered her work at a cafe around 2014 or 2015.

Captivated by Lilik’s materials and artistic expressions, this client placed initial orders that evolved into a long-term business relationship. Among the favored items that have found their way to Australia are woven and leather bracelets priced at Rp400,000 (USD 24,60), alongside various rings and pendants.

Lilik’s artistry has also reached the United States, where her standout product, the Topeng Malangan, has been showcased in a fashion show.

The order for these masks came from an Indonesian residing in Arizona, who sought to introduce Indonesian culture to the American audience. This substantial order consisted of over 20 pieces, thereby establishing a notable presence in the American market.

Offering a diverse range of accessories at varying price points, Lilik produces items that cater to different budgets. The quick-to-make bracelets are available for as low as Rp15,000 (USD 0,92), while higher-end products, such as necklaces, can command prices ranging from Rp150,000 (USD 9,23) to Rp200,000 (USD 12,30).

Recently, she fulfilled a request for unique accessories like headbands made from natural leaves and stone, which she sold for Rp1.5 million (USD 92,25) to a long-time Indonesian resident in France who frequently visits Lombok.

Collaboration

Beyond her sales endeavors, the artisan from Malang actively supports fashion and cultural events, often donating her creations for wear during fashion shows, including the MCC Road to Event. This collaboration with various events has further expanded the exposure of her work to a broader market.

Lilik’s creations continue to garner increasing demand, demonstrating the adaptability and appeal of her pieces. The durability of her copper jewelry adds value, with longevity contingent upon usage and care for necklaces, rings, and bracelets alike.

Through creativity and uniqueness in every piece, Lilik Choirum remains a vibrant representative of Indonesian ethnic art on the global stage. Exemplifying the potential of local products to compete and thrive in various international arenas.
