Malanginspirasi.com – The Malang City Government (Pemkot Malang), through the Environmental Agency (DLH), held the Performance Assessment Event for Communities, Community Institutions, Educational Institutions, and Philanthropists in Environmental Protection and Management on Wednesday, December 17, 2025.
The event took place at the DLH Malang City office and served as a form of appreciation and environmental recognition for the concern shown by various parties in preserving the environment.
Acting Head of DLH Malang City, Gamaliel Raymond Hatigoran Matondang, explained that this activity is a routine agenda aimed at awarding recognition to communities, educational institutions, pondok pesantren (Islamic boarding schools), madrasahs, and philanthropic organizations actively involved in environmental management.
The awards were presented by the Malang City Government, East Java Provincial Government, and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, handed over simultaneously.
“Today, there are around 50 award recipients, consisting of national, provincial, and city-level honors. At the national level, there are six recipients. Provincial-level recipients receive assistance in the form of three-wheeled vehicles,” he said.
“City-level recipients receive development funds ranging from Rp500,000 to Rp15 million. The majority of city-level recipients come from neighborhood associations (RW) in Malang City,” Raymond added.

Assessment Aspects
The evaluation was conducted comprehensively, starting from RW-level environments, schools, madrasahs, to pesantren.
Key aspects assessed include environmental cleanliness, waste management, availability of trash bins, composting efforts, and greening initiatives through planting fruit trees and protective plants.
The assessment team involved various parties, including academics represented by the National Institute of Technology (ITN) Malang and Universitas Brawijaya, provincial and district-level DLH elements, as well as related city agencies such as DLH, the Public Works, Housing, and Spatial Planning Agency (DPUPRPKP), and the Health Agency.

Raymond also noted that some schools or institutions have not yet received awards and are still in the guidance phase.
Common challenges include improper waste placement, such as garbage found in drains or play areas, and inadequate trash bin provision.
“DLH not only assesses but also assists. We provide trash bin facilities and composting infrastructure to improve waste management,” he added.
Furthermore, city-level winners will be entered into provincial competitions and subsequently national ones.
Malang City Government’s Targets
Meanwhile, Malang Mayor Wahyu Hidayat stated that the city’s targets are modest: creating a clean, healthy, and comfortable city to live in.
The Ngalam Rijik (clean) and Ngalam Seger (fresh) programs serve as the main foundation for fostering public awareness in environmental preservation.
“We want the community to realize that cleanliness is part of faith and crucial for preventing floods. Recently, after joint community clean-up efforts in several areas, heavy rains thankfully no longer caused flooding,” he said.

Wahyu emphasized that flood prevention efforts do not rely solely on the government but require consistency and collective awareness from all residents.
He hoped that all elements in Malang City would continue to protect the environment for the city’s long-term sustainability.
