UM Researchers Plant Mangroves on Labuhan Beach, Bangkalan, to Mitigate Climate Change

en.malanginspirasi.com – The State University of Malang (UM), through its Research Team from the Center for Environmental and Disaster Studies (PLMK) showed its commitment to environmental protection by holding  Mangroves Planting Program to mitigate climate change on Labuhan Beach, Bangkalan, Madura.

The activity took place on Sunday, May 3, 2026 as the collaboration with the Madura Mangrove Care Community (KPMM) at Labuhan Beach.

KPMM is an organization that works on in mangrove ecosystem conservation, education, and restoration.

Restoration involved mangrove nurseries and planting in several locations in Bangkalan.

The mangrove forest area in Bangkalan is approximately 1,508.1 hectares, and its area and density need to be continuously increased.

Ecologically, mangrove forests protect coastal areas from abrasion, conserve marine biota, and increase fishermen’s incomes.

Mangrove forests, known as green belts, play a vital role in maintaining the coastal environment.

Mangroves have multiple functions, not only preventing coastal erosion but also absorbing carbon dioxide and producing more oxygen than other plants.

Therefore, mangroves serve as a climate change mitigation tool.

As a university committed to environmental stewardship, UM consistently participates in conservation activities, including marine and coastal conservation, said Prof. Dr. Sumarmi, M.Pd., a lecturer in Geography Education at UM.

Her role is as the lead researcher, along with Dr. Dicky Arinta, Dr. Fahrudi Ahwan Ikhsan, and Mochammad Arif, Si., M.Pd. from Malang State University.

The head of KPMM at Labuhan Beach, led by Mr. Syahril, appreciated the UM researchers’ contributions to coastal ecosystem preservation.

“This collaboration is very meaningful to us, because with the involvement of universities, public awareness of the importance of coastal protection can further improve environmental quality,” he said.

One of the students participating in this activity, Yossafat, S.Pd. (a Master’s student in Geography Education at UM), expressed his joy at being able to participate in this concrete action.

Through such programs, UM hopes to continue contributing to creating a sustainable environment and inspiring more students, institutions, and the community to participate in the environmental movement to mitigate climate change.
