Batik Kantil by Yusnani Dwiana, A Local Art with Global Recognition

Malanginspirasi.com – Batik Kantil, a unique textile art form born from the creative hands of Yusnani Dwiana, affectionately known as Yoessy, is gaining recognition both domestically and internationally. This innovative project brings local cultural imagery to a global stage, marking a significant achievement for Indonesian batik arts.

The journey began in 2019 when this mother of two accepted a challenge from the Kelurahan Mbunulrejo, an ancient village in Malang, rich in historical sites. Local figure Bu Yuke encouraged her to elevate the village’s potential through unique batik designs.

The floral motif of the kantil flower emerged spontaneously from the inspiration of the 59-year-old artist. Each design features the kantil flower, symbolizing natural beauty and a vibrant life.

The first Batik Kantil was launched on November 23, 2019, marking the start of its journey as a part of the local identity that has gained global recognition.

Batik Kantil encompasses two main types: batik tulis and batik cap. Batik tulis is hand-made using canting, creating more detailed and personalized designs. While batik cap employs printing techniques for larger production. Both styles possess their unique characteristics while maintaining high aesthetic values.

“The process of creating batik is indeed long,” Yoessy notes.

“From canting the designs to dyeing and washing, everything requires diligence and time. Not everyone has the patience for these stages,” she added.

Nonetheless, she expresses gratitude for her solid and dedicated team, which continues to develop Batik Kantil. They produce uniforms and various batik products for institutions such as BRI, BPN, Puskesmas, and SMP Negeri Tujuh.

Batik Kantil is more than a product; it symbolizes uniqueness and perseverance.

“We produce the fabric ourselves, allowing consumers to choose directly,” Yoessy explains.

Prices for the batik range from IDR 175,000 to IDR 300,000, depending on the type and size of the garments. Additionally, Yoessy takes on custom orders for wedding attire and other accessories, ensuring every piece is crafted with care.

Her creative process is collaborative, drawing ideas from a diverse team.

“Initially, I painted and aspired to create something beyond mere artwork. The imperfect eco prints I made turned into new creations like leaf batik,” she shares, blending her passion for painting with textiles.

Beyond batik, Yoessy also crafts accessories from raw material waste, such as unique pieces made from can lids.

Beyond batik, Yoessy designs accessories from raw material waste, such as utilizing can lids for unique adornments. She participates in several communities, including KCB, CKPM, and APBKM, to share knowledge and expand her network.

Through perseverance, creative spirit, and community support, Yoessy has successfully turned Batik Kantil into a worldwide artistic endeavor. This initiative not only highlights local culture but also introduces the beauty of Indonesian batik to younger generations and the international community.
