FEB UB Hosts “Zakat Goes To Campus” Event in Malang

Malanginspirasi.com – Universitas Brawijaya (UB) served as the host for the “Zakat Goes To Campus Chapter Malang” event, organized by the Malang Raya Regional Zakat Forum. The program took place on Monday, November 24, 2025, at the Main Auditorium of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UB).

The initiative aims to boost zakat literacy among the younger generation, particularly university students.

Muhammad Fandi Bakhtiar, Chairman of the Malang Raya Regional Zakat Forum, urged students to understand the true essence of zakat from an early age.

He emphasized that the program is designed to raise awareness. Zakat is not merely a religious obligation but also carries significant social impact.

“The noble goal of Zakat Goes To Campus is to foster the realization that zakat is extremely important—not just as an obligation, but because it profoundly affects society. Especially among Generation Z, understanding of zakat remains very limited,” he stated.

Fandi explained that zakat can serve as a solution to various societal issues, ranging from poverty and business capital needs to educational scholarships.

“Through zakat, we can address problems such as poverty, provide business capital, and fund educational scholarships,” he added.

He stressed the importance of channeling zakat through officially certified institutions recognized by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and BAZNAS.

“In the Malang Raya area, there are 26 zakat institutions that are safe under national law (NKRI), compliant with Islamic principles (syari’ah), and fully regulated. Through these institutions, zakat distribution is not only delivered but also monitored until it is fully utilized,” he explained.

Broadening Horizons

Prof. Ananda Sabil Hussein, Vice Dean I of FEB UB, highlighted that educational forums like this are crucial for opening students’ eyes to the immense potential of zakat.

“The philanthropic spirit of Indonesian society is enormous. If channeled through zakat, this potential can drive the economy and improve overall welfare,” he said.

He expressed hope that the event would deepen students’ understanding and awareness of zakat.

Meanwhile, Malang Deputy Mayor Ali Muthohirin affirmed that zakat is an obligation for all generations—not just the older ones, but especially the youth.

“Zakat is not only the duty of the older generation; it applies to the younger generation as well. This event aims to help young people understand that zakat is an obligation for every Muslim,” Ali remarked.

He also encouraged UB students to make infak (voluntary charity) and sedekah (almsgiving) a way of life. Believing it will bring ease in this world and the hereafter.

“We don’t have to wait until we are rich. Even the smallest amount we set aside still holds great meaning. It will open doors of ease for us in this life and the next,” he concluded.
