en.malanginspirasi.com – A fire broke out at the Supit Urang Landfill (TPS Supit Urang) located in Bandulan Village, Sukun Sub-district, Malang City, on Wednesday afternoon (October 21, 2026).

Dry waste at the site caused the flames to spread rapidly, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky that could be clearly seen from nearby residential neighborhoods.

The incident caused panic among local residents as a pungent smell of smoke filled the air and rose high into the atmosphere.

Fearing that the fire would spread toward their homes, concerned residents immediately contacted the Malang City Fire Department (Damkar).

Responding swiftly to the report, the Malang City Fire Department deployed fire trucks to the scene. Firefighters moved quickly to extinguish the flames and thoroughly wet down the hot spots to prevent the fire from spreading further across the landfill.

Head of the Malang City Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP), Prayitno, confirmed that beyond the firefighting teams, several Satpol PP personnel were also mobilized to the location.

“Malang City Satpol PP personnel were deployed to the scene to secure the surrounding area and assist with smooth handling operations,” Prayitno stated when confirmed.

As of now, firefighting and cooling operations by officers are still ongoing at the landfill area.

The exact cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the relevant authorities.

However, initial suspicions suggest it may have been triggered by excessive heat accumulation from within the stacked waste or a carelessly discarded cigarette butt.

Fortunately, there have been no reports of fatalities or injuries resulting from the incident.

Despite this, the total material losses and the extent of air pollution caused by the dense smoke are still being evaluated by related agencies.

In response to the incident, local sub-district authorities have strongly urged the public to refrain from burning trash indiscriminately and to remain highly vigilant, particularly in areas prone to fire hazards.
