Indonesian Government Doubles Eid Bonus (BHR) to Rp220 Billion for 850,000 Online Drivers

EN.malanginspirasi.com – The Indonesian government on Tuesday announced a doubling of the Eid al-Fitr (Lebaran) bonus for hundreds of thousands of online drivers and delivery couriers, injecting a total of Rp220 billion into the gig economy just weeks before Idulfitri 1447 H.

The policy, formally known as Bonus Hari Raya (BHR), will benefit approximately 850,000 registered partners, nearly double the funding allocated last year.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto made the announcement during a joint press conference with Manpower Minister Yassierli in Jakarta.

“The amount provided as BHR in 2026 can cover around 850,000 recipient partners or drivers, with a total value of Rp220 billion. And this amount is double compared to last year,” Airlangga stated.

Last year’s allocation stood at only Rp105–110 billion. The increase mirrors the 10% rise in civil servants’ Tunjangan Hari Raya (THR) payments and forms part of a broader economic stimulus package targeting 5.4–5.6% GDP growth this year.

Unlike mandatory THR for formal employees, the BHR for online drivers and couriers remains a government recommendation issued through a Ministerial Circular. Platform companies including Gojek, Grab, Maxim, and inDrive have voluntarily committed to funding the program under official guidelines.

Manpower Minister Yassierli stressed that the minimum bonus must equal at least 25% of each partner’s average net income over the past 12 months. Calculations are carried out individually and paid in cash.

Practical estimates circulating among drivers are as follows:

• Active motorcycle-taxi drivers: Rp150,000–Rp275,000

• Car or online-taxi drivers: Rp200,000–Rp400,000

• Overall average: Rp250,000–Rp400,000 per person, depending on platform and productivity.

For example, a driver with Rp2 million average monthly net earnings over a year would qualify for a minimum Rp500,000 bonus, though final amounts will be adjusted to fit the Rp220 billion total pool.

Gojek and Grab are expected to shoulder the bulk of the cost, each preparing roughly Rp100–110 billion for their respective fleets.

Payout Schedule and Eligibility

Disbursement will begin as early as 14 days before Lebaran (early March) and no later than seven days prior to Idulfitri, in line with the minister’s directive.

“BHR must be paid at the latest seven days before the holiday — and we urge companies to disburse it even earlier,” Yassierli emphasized.

To qualify, partners must: • Have been officially registered for at least 12 months • Maintain active order targets, ratings, and online hours • Have no current suspensions or serious violations

Payments will be credited directly to the driver’s app balance or verified bank account. Drivers are advised to monitor app notifications and ensure banking details are up to date.

Economic Impact and Criticism

The move continues last year’s program but at a significantly higher scale amid post-pandemic recovery and the approaching Ramadan season. Airlangga highlighted the platforms’ strong commitment following intensive government dialogue.

Economically, the cash injection targets millions of gig-economy workers whose incomes fluctuate with order volumes. Officials hope the extra funds will stimulate household consumption, particularly in transport and logistics sectors.

However, labor unions have voiced disappointment. The Confederation of Indonesian Workers’ Unions (KSPI) had pushed for a minimum of 75% of annual earnings. The realized 25% floor, while welcomed, falls short of union expectations, though the government has pledged transparency and oversight by regional manpower offices.
