Battling Obesity, How Changes of Daily Habits Can Bring Significance

The Danish Ambassador to Indonesia, Sten Frimodt Nielsen delivered speech at the Obesity Disease Awareness Event: Harapan Yang Merangi in Jakarta on Thursday (May 7, 2026).

He emphasized the importance of awareness and collective action in addressing this health issue.

The event was a collaborative initiative with the Indonesian Ministry of Health to campaign for obesity prevention. Nielsen emphasized that a deeper understanding of obesity will enable individuals and institutions to respond better.

Nielsen stated that battling obesity requires a collaborative effort involving strong public leadership, active involvement of the healthcare sector, responsible industry involvement, and increased awareness at the community level.

“Fighting obesity requires a collective effort. No single actor can solve it alone,” Nielsen emphasized.

Reflecting on the experience in Denmark, Nielsen stated that prevention and early intervention are crucial.

He encouraged changes in daily habits toward healthier ones, both through better nutrition and regular physical activity.

“Often, big changes start from simple things. Small steps in daily routines and increased awareness, consistently implemented, will combine to have a significant impact on long-term health,” he said.

One of the key points that he raised is the urgency of eliminating the stigma surrounding obesity.

He mentioned that obesity is not simply a matter of personal responsibility, but rather a health issue that requires proper understanding, treatment, and support.

“Initiatives such as health checks (screenings), consultations, and open discussions are expected to help people understand their own health conditions in a positive and supportive manner,” he said.

Concluding his statement, he also expressed his appreciation to the Indonesian Ministry of Health for its commitment to prioritizing public health.

He is optimistic that this collaboration will create stronger awareness and concrete steps towards a healthier society.

“The ‘Battle Obesity’ campaign is a call not only to reflect, but to act,” he concluded.
