En.malanginspirasi.com – The head of Malang City Statistics Agency (BPS Kota Malang) Umar Sjaifudin, M.Si stated that the institution continues to strengthen synergies with Faculty of Science, Technology, and Mathematics (FSTeM) Brawijaya University (UB), particularly The Department of Statistics.
He mentioned that the involvement of students from internship or Community Service Program (KKN) can support government data management.
Umar revealed that for the past three years, his office has directed UB’s KKN students to be placed in all sub-districts in Malang City.
This program has produced an output called ‘Desa Cinta Statistik or Cantik’ where students assist sub-districts with data updates, website management, and infographic creation.
“We direct our KKN students to be in the city, placed in all sub-districts in Malang City,” he said on an event titled ‘Ngopi Santai’ at TALENT Room FSTeM UB, Friday, June 19th.
In addition to the KKN collaboration, BPS Malang City has also noted the high absorption of alumni from UB’s Department of statistics in its workplace.
Currently, nearly seven alumni from the department are working at the BPS Malang City office.
“Graduates from UB’s Department of Statistics have an advantage over related majors like pure mathematics because they master data analysts and other subjects that support the specific requirements,” he mentioned.

“The institution require skills specifically in statistics. Those graduates can immediately handle all available data, not only in government but also in companies,” he said.
He compared this to his own experience as a pure mathematics graduate.
Umar found it more difficult to enter the workforce because the scope of the study was too general and there were rarely any vacancies specifically for mathematics.
