Malanginspirasi.com – In commemoration of Hari Juang TNI AD (Indonesian Army Day), Kodim 0833/Baladhika Jaya Kota Malang, in collaboration with the Tunggulwulung Village administration, carried out a community service activity (karya bakti) aimed at addressing recurring flood issues in Malang City, particularly in the Lowokwaru District.
Lieutenant Colonel Inf Dedy Azis emphasised that the initiative was a direct response to community complaints about flooding during the rainy season.
“This is in response to several complaints from the community and the village head regarding floods that occur during the rainy season,” he added.

Captain Faisal Pelu, Commander of Koramil Lowokwaru, explained the ongoing river normalisation efforts.
“We took the initiative to normalise the rivers in Lowokwaru District, especially in Tunggulwulung,” he said.
“We feel compassion seeing residents frequently affected by floods, so we initiated river normalisation,” he expressed.
One critical point identified was a public toilet built over a drainage channel.
“It has been coordinated with local residents and the village head. We will demolish it to facilitate normalisation,” he affirmed.

Faisal added that the normalisation activities are being conducted continuously.
“It will be ongoing without interruption. So the normalisation can proceed smoothly all the way to the Permata Jingga housing area,” he noted.
Causes of Flooding in Malang City
According to him, flooding is caused not only by illegal structures but also by blockages and river siltation.
“We are digging out trash, tree branches, and soil to restore normal flow,” he explained.
The community service involved multiple parties. Including volunteers from the TNI and Polri (Indonesian Police), district and village officials, community resilience groups (kampung tangguh), students from SMK Maharani, and local residents.
Tunggulwulung Village Head, Imbran, stated that recent floods were quite severe.
“On the main road, near the bridge, the water overflowed yesterday, and residents immediately conducted community service to remove sediment,” he said.
He added that utilising dams for flood control will be implemented.
“We will make use of the nearby dam, but the section leading to the retention pond has experienced siltation. For now, agencies such as Public Works, Environment, and community elements will conduct dredging there, up to the pond on Jalan Angklung,” Imbran explained.

Subsequently, the retention pond on Jalan Angklung will have water gates installed by the Provincial Department of Public Works, Spatial Planning, Housing, and Settlements (DPUPRPKP) to control water discharge.
“Once the water gates are installed, they will serve as a control mechanism for incoming water, helping to prevent flooding,” he said.
Through these joint efforts, the village administration hopes to reduce flooding by cleaning drainage systems.
“For now, we are focusing on cleaning the drainage so that water does not enter residents’ homes,” he concluded.
