en.malanginspirasi.com – Early Tuesday morning, activists from Greenpeace Indonesia climbed the iconic Tugu Selamat Datang (Welcome Monument) at Bundaran Hotel Indonesia (HI) in Central Jakarta, unfurling large yellow banners protesting the government’s handling of the climate crisis, ecological disasters, and rising living costs.

Around 6:00 a.m. WIB, six climbers wearing helmets and safety harnesses scaled the monument.

They hung two giant banners: one reading “Bencana Makin Parah, Hidup Makin Susah, Apa Kerja Pemerintah?” (“Disasters Are Getting Worse, Life Is Getting Harder, What Is the Government Doing?”) facing south, and another stating “Tangani Krisis Iklim, Turunkan Biaya Hidup” (“Tackle the Climate Crisis, Lower the Cost of Living”) facing north toward the Presidential Palace.

The action coincided with the second anniversary of the Prabowo Subianto–Gibran Rakabuming Raka administration.

Greenpeace said the protest highlighted how extreme weather, forest and land fires (karhutla), and prolonged haze—particularly affecting Kalimantan—are harming public health, disrupting livelihoods, and driving up food prices and daily expenses.

“Extreme weather and ecological disasters not only threaten public safety and health, but also disrupt livelihoods, depress incomes, and drive up food prices,” said Jeanny Sirait, Climate Justice Campaigner for Greenpeace Indonesia.

“Prolonged haze is a clear example of how an ecological crisis places a burden on people’s lives,” she continued.

She added that the choice of Bundaran HI was because public officials frequently passes the area so there will be an increasing chance for the message to reach policymakers.

The group also referenced its research titled “Besok Harga Naik!” linking climate impacts to higher living costs.

Police, firefighters, TNI personnel, and Satpol PP quickly secured the area. Using loudspeakers, officers repeatedly urged the activists to come down safely.

The banners were removed between approximately 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. with assistance from fire department teams.

The climbers remained on the monument longer before descending via ropes around 10:28–10:30 a.m.

Some appeared fatigued and were taken to a police medical vehicle for checks.

Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief Kombes Pol. Reynold E.P. Hutagalung confirmed authorities are investigating how the activists accessed the monument and will examine related parties.

He emphasized safety as the priority while stating that police would protect the protesters.

The dramatic early-morning action drew significant attention from motorists, passersby, and social media users as traffic continued around the busy roundabout.

Meanwhile, DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung responded to the giant banner flying at the Hotel Indonesia roundabout.

He stated that this action is part of democracy that everyone should respect.

“I want to convey first, especially this morning, coincidentally, in Bundaran HI there was also an action carried out by a group of Green Peace. Indonesia is a democratic country. Of course we give respect and appreciation to that kind of thing. But the most important thing is not to disturb public order,” he mentioned.

He continued that he was glad that those activists already come down in order to avoid dangerous things that might occur.
