SMPN 25’s Batik Ciprat Shines at Malang’s Metamorphosis Art Exhibition

Malanginspirasi.com – The Metamorphosis-themed art exhibition at the Malang Creative Center (MCC) on December 16, 2025, showcased a variety of creative works, with Batik Ciprat emerging as a standout piece of pride for SMP Negeri 25 Malang.

This innovative batik features dynamic artistic expression through unique splatters on fabric, while educating younger generations on the importance of creativity in traditional arts.

Nani, a teacher from SMP Negeri 25 Malang, explained that Batik Ciprat is an expressive creation blending lines, shapes, and colors in harmonious compositions.

“We teach the children this for practical exams, but these are also my own works. They can be used for chair cushions, bags, or clothing. Right now, we’re holding a Batik Ciprat fashion show,” Nani said.

The Batik Ciprat Creation Process

Producing Batik Ciprat requires precision and takes around four hours.

The technique begins with splattering white wax (malam) onto the fabric for about 15 minutes, followed by dyeing with remasol.

Next, the fabric is treated with a water glass solution as a fixative, sun-dried, and boiled to ensure the colors remain vibrant and sharp.

The process concludes with removing the wax to perfect the design.

Though simple, each splatter carries its own story, reflecting the creator’s mood and expression.

“Each piece is original and not repeated in subsequent sessions,” Nani added.

Batik Ciprat pieces are sold starting from Rp200,000 (US$12) and up. It depends on the complexity and expressive value of each work.

Nani interprets the Metamorphosis theme in her works as a symbol of personal transformation and creative expression in artistry.

Introducing Local Culture

Nani emphasized that exhibitions like this are crucial for introducing and preserving local culture. Particularly batik art, to the wider community.

“We want the public to know that we have works worth taking pride in—as a source of pride for Malang City and Indonesia,” she said.
