Role in Cultural and Community Preservation
In addition to excellence in education, FIB UB emphasizes real contributions to society through various collaborative programs.
This includes collaborations with local governments, national and international institutions.
One concrete implementation is through the Community Service Program (KKN) and the Student Creativity Program (PKM), which are aimed at mapping and documenting local cultural potential in the Greater Malang area.
“Students not only learn theory in the classroom, but also go directly to villages to assist the community, identify local cultural needs, and help preserve them through scientific and digital approaches,” explained Fauzi.
Active Collaboration with the Government
Furthermore, FIB UB actively collaborates with the Malang City and Malang Regency governments.
They also participate in international programs such as the International Workshop Station, which focuses on mapping local culture-based industries, from batik crafts to Malangan masks.
The Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) UB’s excellence in cultural preservation is strengthening through the establishment of Indonesian Cultural Houses (Rumah Budaya Indonesia) at Guangxi Normal University and Tianjin Foreign Studies University.
This initiative demonstrates Universitas Brawijaya’s commitment to promoting Indonesian culture globally.
“Through the Indonesian Cultural Houses, we not only introduce language and art, but also Indonesian cultural values to the international community,” he added.
In facing the digital era, FIB UB is integrating digital humanities as a center of excellence.
“So, we want to develop research and community service in East Java. We explore local culture based on authentic data. We develop it so that it can be exposed globally,” said Fauzi.
Center for Language, Culture, and Character Studies
Furthermore, The Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) UB exists not only as a center for language and cultural studies, but also as a foundation for the university’s character and culture, playing a direct role in society.
“Digitalization without culture is like development without character. Therefore, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB UB) plays a crucial role in ensuring consistent technological development, grounded in humanitarian and cultural values,” said Luthfi.
Cultural digitalization is carried out through digital documentation, data-driven research, and the packaging of cultural content in creative forms such as social media, films, and other digital platforms.
“Culture does not have to be abandoned for the sake of modernity. In fact, with digitalization, culture can coexist with the times and become a source of the creative economy,” said Fauzi.
Through this approach, FIB UB graduates are prepared to become competent professionals in the fields of humanities and culture.
With the ability to develop linguistic competence, global insight, entrepreneurial spirit, and cultural sensitivity.
Prospects of graduate comprise:
- Entrepreneurs and creative industry developers (content creators, content writers, digital marketers)
- Language and culture educators or teachers
- Professional translators
- Archivists and socio-cultural consultants
- Anthropology practitioners in local governments or companies
Specifically, the Anthropology Study Program aims to provide graduates with contributions to public policy planning, community assistance, and the development of sustainable social programs.
A concrete example of the implementation of graduate competencies is seen in Japanese and Chinese Literature students who were recruited by Japanese companies after completing internships.
Furthermore, Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) UB continues to enhance student competency through collaborations with domestic and international institutions.
It includes native speakers in every foreign language study program and provides comprehensive learning facilities.
These include disability-friendly facilities, a literacy center, a co-working space, and an arts and culture space.
FIB UB affirms its commitment as an inclusive faculty that is open to all levels of society.
