en.malanginspirasi.com – The recent controversy surrounding the film ‘Pesta Babi’ (Feast of the Pig) has sparked a variety of responses from the public.
Some view the film as a form of artistic expression, while others consider its content and symbols to be causing social unrest.
Responding to this controversy, Cahyono, Chairman of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) in Malang Raya, believes that differing views on a work of art are a natural part of democracy and freedom of thought.
He considers that the public needs to prioritize quality thinking and maturity in understanding an issue as the primary foundation before judging a work.

“Every art work, including films and cultural rituals, is essentially a medium for expression and interpretation. Naturally, each person has a different perspective on its meaning,” Cahyono said.
He emphasized that freedom of expression is part of the dynamics of modern society and is inseparable from the development of art and culture.
However, the public needs to demonstrate maturity in addressing differing perspectives to avoid becoming easily trapped in emotional conflict or destructive debate.
“We are free to think as long as we can place reason as the highest standard. When someone understands the essence and context of an issue, then any medium of expression is essentially just a path of interpretation,” he said.
Cahyono added that when assessing a work of art, people should not focus solely on symbols or superficial appearance, but also understand the message, context, and values the creator intended to convey.
He also reminded that criticism of works of art is legitimate in a democratic country.
However, criticism should flow proportionally, without being provocative, and while respecting the diversity of views within society.
“Differences of opinion are fine. The important thing is not to cause social divisions or eliminate the space for polite dialogue,” he stressed.
The controversy surrounding the film ‘Pesta Babi’ remains a hot topic on social media.
A variety of responses have emerged, ranging from support for freedom of expression to rejection of content and messages deemed sensitive by some.
Amidst the strong current of public opinion, some parties hope that the public will be wiser in responding to works of art, while maintaining a healthy, open, and respectful climate of discussion in public spaces.
