Young Portuguese Midfielder Quevin Castro Dies After Collapsing During Friendly Match

en.malanginspirasi.com – Quevin Castro, a 25-year-old Portuguese midfielder, died on Saturday after collapsing during a pre-season friendly match in Portugal, the Lisbon Football Association confirmed.

Castro was playing for third-tier Real Sport Clube against top-flight Estrela da Amadora at the Estádio das Seixas in Malveira, near Lisbon.

He indicated he felt unwell around the 10th minute of the first half before falling to the ground.

Medical staff from both teams provided immediate care on the pitch, including the use of a defibrillator.

He was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival or shortly thereafter. The match was abandoned.

The Lisbon Football Association described the incident as a tragedy for Portuguese football and offered its deepest condolences to Castro’s family, friends, and Real Sport Clube.

Real Sport Clube said in a statement that Castro “was much more than just a player; he was an integral part of our family, leaving an indelible mark on all those who knew him, both on and off the pitch.”

Estrela da Amadora also expressed profound sorrow and extended condolences to his loved ones and the Real Sport Clube community.

Born in Lisbon on August 16, 2001, Castro came through the Sporting CP academy.

He later built much of his career in English football, including a spell at West Bromwich Albion, where he joined in 2021 and made his senior debut in the Carabao Cup against Arsenal.

He also featured for the Baggies in the Championship and had loan spells at clubs including Burton Albion, Notts County, and Gateshead.

After leaving West Brom in 2023, he played for several non-league sides such as York City, Cambridge City, and Eastbourne Borough before returning to Portugal last summer to sign with Real Sport Clube.

West Bromwich Albion said it was “devastated” by the news of its former player’s untimely death.

The club announced it would pay tribute with a period of applause in the 25th minute of its Championship match against Burnley on Sunday, with players wearing black armbands.

Other former clubs and teammates remembered him as a valued and energetic central midfielder.

Fans shared photos of Castro smiling and sent messages of support and condolences to his family.

Castro had only recently turned 25.

No further official details on the exact medical cause beyond reports of a cardiac arrest or cardiorespiratory stop have been released.

The football community continues to mourn the loss of a young talent remembered for his energy, power, and presence both on and off the field.
