en.malanginspirasi.com –  Faculty of Agro-Industrial Technology and Biosystems (FTAB) at Universitas Brawijaya (UB) students  secured two medals at the 3rd International Student and Young Scientist Project Competition, “SMART CITY 2030: Sustainable Urban Development Management in BRICS Countries.”

Held on October 6, 2026, in Moscow, Russia, this prestigious international competition drew 391 teams from various nations, including BRICS member states and partner countries.

The event serves as a platform for students and young scientists to present innovations and intelligent ideas for supporting sustainable urban development.

The UB team, led by Soffi Septia Ramadhaniati, with members Nisrina Alhumairoh, Anjar Maulana Afriansah, and Muharrom Haidar Rabbani Kusuma, delivered an outstanding performance, earning awards in two separate categories for a single innovative project.

In the “Smart City Technologies and Services” category, the UB team won 1st place (Gold Medal) with their project titled “LAND-FORECAST: Predictive of Land-Use Conversion Areas and Magnitude Based on Population and Agricultural Projections in Pasuruan Regency, Indonesia.”

Additionally, the team secured 2nd place (Silver Medal) in the “Safe and Comfortable Urban Environment” category with the same project.

The “LAND-FORECAST” innovation is a predictive WebGIS-based platform capable of mapping the areas and scale of land-use conversion, driven by projections of population growth and agricultural trends.

The system is to assist local governments in formulating more precise, targeted, and sustainable spatial planning policies.

The team leader, Soffi Septia Ramadhaniati, explained that the idea stemmed from concerns regarding the high rate of agricultural land conversion in Pasuruan Regency.

“We observed that a significant amount of productive agricultural land in Pasuruan is being transformed into built-up areas. Through LAND-FORECAST, we aim to provide an early warning system for the local government, enabling them to plan development without compromising food security,” said Soffi.

She added that the platform offers more than just maps; it provides comprehensive spatial analysis.

“This WebGIS integrates demographic data, agricultural projections, and satellite imagery. We hope it will serve as an accurate decision-making tool to help realize a truly sustainable ‘smart city,'” she added.

The success of the UB team in securing two medals across two different categories demonstrates that their innovation is highly relevant—both in terms of technology and in enhancing the comfort and safety of the urban environment.

The Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Technology (FTAB) at UB expressed appreciation for this achievement.

“This accomplishment proves that FTAB students are capable of competing on a global stage and developing innovative solutions for real-world regional challenges. It aligns with the faculty’s commitment to fostering impactful research,” the Dean stated.

This remarkable achievement can strengthen the contribution of Indonesian students’ innovations toward the transformation of smart cities and the development of environmentally friendly urban areas.

It also serves as an inspiration for other students to continue innovating and to bring recognition to Universitas Brawijaya on the international stage.
