Indonesia’s Rice Reserves Smash Historic 5 Million Ton Record, Securing Food Stability Until 2027

EN.malanginspirasi.com – Indonesia has achieved a historic milestone in food resilience. The government, through the National Food Agency (Bapanas), announced that the Government Rice Reserves (CBP) managed by the State Logistics Agency (Perum Bulog) officially reached 5,000,198 tons as of April 23, 2026. This monumental accomplishment ensures that the availability of the nation’s staple food is in an extremely secure position, estimated to be sufficient until early 2027.

The Head of Bapanas, who also serves as Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman, stated that this is the highest stock level in Indonesian history.

“Alhamdulillah, this is the result of our collective hard work,” he declared during a press briefing.

According to him, this massive availability serves as a shield against the looming threat of El Niño.

The government calculates that the total national food resilience far exceeds the predicted impact of drought conditions. With Bulog holding a stock of 5 million tons, the hotel, restaurant, and catering (horeca) sector holding 12.5 million tons, and an estimated standing crop in the field of 11 million tons, Indonesia possesses food ammunition equivalent to 11 months of demand.

If production continues during the dry season, this coverage could surge up to 15 months, ensuring safety until approximately April 2027.

The main drivers behind this record are the surge in domestic production and the policy to halt imports. In 2025, national rice production jumped by 13.29 percent to 34.69 million tons.

Consequently, the government did not import any rice throughout last year and is committed to continuing the same policy in 2026. This stands in stark contrast to the 2023-2024 period, during which a total of roughly 7 million tons were imported.

To accommodate the stock surge, Bulog has massively expanded its storage capacity by renting additional warehouses. The national warehouse capacity has been boosted from around 3 million tons to a total of 5 million tons. To guarantee transparency, the Minister of Agriculture has invited the public to directly inspect the stock conditions in Bulog warehouses, given that the asset value reaches IDR 55 to 60 trillion.

This abundant stock also opens up opportunities for Indonesia to resume exports and send humanitarian aid to other countries, such as Palestine and Sudan.
