Known for shaping Indonesian cinema through iconic action and historical epics, the filmmaker died following complications related to heart and lung conditions.
The news was confirmed by his family. According to his son, Satria Pinandita, Tantowi was at his residence in Karawaci, Tangerang, where he passed away quietly during the evening after completing his daily prayers.
Born in Slawi, Tegal, on August 13, 1946, Imam Tantowi was one of the most prominent figures in Indonesia’s film industry throughout the late 20th century.

Over a career spanning decades, he directed and wrote screenplays for numerous acclaimed historical, action, and cultural productions.

In addition to feature films, he successfully transitioned into television, producing prominent drama series and historical epics.
